So, part of my new years resolution is to try to keep my writing skills alive! So, I have taken up a writing challenge, and I will try to do it as often as possible. Well, it is quite difficult. But I haven't done creative writing in a while, and I actually quite enjoy it so far!! So, I will put them here also. The challenge is from Pinterest. Here's the ink:
Day one: Write a story about a character after a New Years' Eve Party
Adam walked briskly through the bustling town centre. The illuminating soft-white glow of the Christmas lights hanging from lamppost to lamppost twinkled absentmindedly above him, and the raucous laughter of groups of young, drunk people celebrating the new year got quieter and quieter as he trudged further away from the clubs. Soft, drizzling rain began to fall while he turned the street corner, avoiding eye contact with the homeless man huddled up in the doorway of the old clothing store that recently shut down.
Nearing the car park, he felt a soft buzzing in his coat pocket and heard a muffled chiming sound. Pulling out his phone, he saw a message from his friend Karina, who had gone back to New York, to celebrate New Years in Times Square. He made a mental note to reply to her and quickly scanned the road before he jogged across it. Walking into the car park, he scanned the rows of cars, searching for his red Ford Fiesta. He strolled through the large open space, his eyebrows getting more and more furrowed as he repetitively walked past every car, van and truck parked in the remaining bays.
Adam ran a hand down his face and walked through the car park again, loosening his scarf as he began to heat up and an anxious feeling started to form in his stomach. After passing the same silver Lexus for the fifth time, Adam stopped in his tracks and blinked in disbelief. His car had been stolen while he was celebrating the New Year with his University friends. He audibly groaned and kicked the wall separating the car park from the train line. A flurry of swear words left his mouth and tears almost threatened to spill from his eyes.
His heart pounded at the thought of telling his parents the car they bought him for his 18th birthday had been stolen. He made another mental note to call the police in the morning, concluding that they would all be off-duty at 2am on New Years Day. He called a taxi, talking briskly to the man on the phone. He hung up and stood in silence for a few minutes, his mind racing with a series of emotions. With no warning, he burst into a loud and angry tangent of cursing and screaming at the top of his lungs. He cursed his friends for inviting him out, he screamed out the frustrations he felt at himself for accepting, and he scrutinised himself for not parking in the same car park as his friends on the other side of town, when something clicked in his mind.
His friends had told him about a different car park that was closer to the clubs two days ago. Adam was unsure of whether to use it because it was more expensive, but he had decided to try it after the weather had said it was going to rain and he concluded that he didn't want to walk a long way by himself after the party. An embarrassed chuckle left Adam, and he turned around and walked out of his usual car park. He picked up his phone, and called the taxi, notifying them of his cancellation and apologising profusely.
Practically running now, he made his way to the other car park, ignoring the laughs after he almost tripped in the town square. The cold breeze whipped past his face and the soft water drops dripped off of his coat. Reaching the car park, he scanned the cars in the bays, panting heavily, and swallowing profusely. His red car was at the end of the third row, glistening from the raindrops reflecting off the doors.
Adam could have cried tears of joy, when he sat in his car and the familiar hum of the engine greeted him. Turning out the parking bay, he drove home in silence, grinning to himself as he thought about his earlier mistake.
